A puck screen sits on top of the coffee puck inside the portafilter basket, between the grounds and the grouphead shower screen. When the grouphead engages, water passes through the puck screen before hitting the puck — distributing pressure evenly across the entire puck surface rather than letting it concentrate in one area. The result is reduced channeling, more even extraction, and a cleaner grouphead shower screen after each shot.

Single vs Double vs Triple Layer — Which One Do You Need?

• Single Layer — one stainless steel mesh screen. Entry-level upgrade from no screen at all. Improves water distribution and keeps the shower screen cleaner between backflushes. Best for: home brewers who want a simple, low-maintenance improvement.
• Double Layer — two stainless steel mesh layers. Greater flow resistance distributes water pressure more evenly across the puck surface, reducing channeling more effectively than a single layer. Best for: baristas who are actively dialling in extraction consistency.
• Triple Layer — three stainless steel mesh layers. Maximum flow resistance and the most even water distribution of the three options. Particularly effective with lighter roasts and finer grinds where channeling risk is highest. Best for: specialty coffee setups where extraction evenness is the primary focus.
