Espresso Tamping Mat with Corner Edge, 8.25 x 6" Food-Grade Rubber

An espresso tamping mat protects your counter and your portafilter while you tamp, and this one adds a corner edge that does something a flat mat cannot. You hook the portafilter handle against the raised edge and it stays put, so you tamp straight down at the same angle every time instead of wrestling the handle or tamping crooked. A crooked tamp leaves one side of the puck denser than the other, and that shows up as an uneven, sour-bitter shot.

Who this is for

Anyone new to espresso who is still building the habit of a level tamp, and anyone training someone else on their machine. It is also just a nicer workspace: at 8.25 x 6 inches, it is the largest of the three Barista Basics mats I carry, with room to set down a tamper and a distribution tool next to the portafilter.

How to use it

Set the mat at the edge of your counter with the corner facing you. Rest the portafilter spout-side down on the mat with the handle against the raised edge, then tamp straight down. The edge does the aligning; you just focus on even pressure. Rinse it with warm water when grounds build up and let it air dry.

Do you need the corner edge?

If your tamps are already consistent and you just want to protect the counter, a flat mat does the job for less. I carry the 5 x 12" rectangle and the 6 x 6" square. If you are still learning, or your shots vary more than you would like, the corner edge is worth it.
