Espresso WDT Distribution Tool | Black Magnetic, Black or White

So far, this WDT tool has been pretty handy. I use it to stir and distribute espresso grounds before tamping, and the magnetic version has made putting it away a lot less fiddly.

My last WDT tool sat on a post. Getting it back onto that post without bending the needles was always a challenge. With the Black Magnetic version I've been testing, I can put the tool back on its magnetic holder without threading the needles around a post. That has made it easier to keep them from getting knocked out of alignment during storage.

What is a WDT tool?

WDT stands for Weiss Distribution Technique. It's a simple step in espresso preparation: gently stir the ground coffee to loosen clumps and spread it more evenly before you tamp. This is a distribution tool, not a tamper. You still tamp the coffee after using it.

A more even bed of grounds gives you a better starting point for brewing. It doesn't replace dialing in your grind size and dose, but it's a practical addition if clumpy grounds are part of your routine.

My testing notes

The needles have been long enough to use in my distribution cup, which lets me work through the grounds before transferring them into the basket. The magnetic holder is the part I appreciate most: putting the tool away feels straightforward rather than like a test of how carefully I can avoid bending a needle.

Those notes are based on the Black Magnetic version and my own setup. Cup depth and equipment vary, so don't assume the same fit with every distribution cup.

Choose your version

• Black Magnetic: The magnetic 8-pin version described in my testing notes.
• Black: The black option. My magnetic-holder comments apply to Black Magnetic.
• White: The white option. Select Black Magnetic if the magnetic setup is what you're after.

Product details

• Body material: Aluminum alloy.
• Use: Handheld espresso-ground distribution before tamping.
• Design: Simple, solid-color finish.
• Black Magnetic configuration: Eight needles with a magnetic holding setup.

How to use it

1. Dose your espresso grounds into your portafilter basket or distribution cup.
2. Gently move the needles through the grounds to loosen clumps and redistribute the coffee.
3. If using a distribution cup, transfer the grounds into your basket. Even out the surface and tamp as usual.
4. After use, carefully return the tool to its holder. Keep fingers clear of the sharp needles.

Use light movements rather than aggressive stirring, and avoid forcing the needles against the sides or bottom of your basket or cup.

If putting your current WDT tool away is the most awkward part of using it, the magnetic version is worth a look. That's the improvement I've noticed most in my own routine.
