What it tastes like
Chocolate and soft fruit, gentle sweetness, mild acidity, and the clean finish Blue Mountain built its name on. It's a famously smooth, low-acid coffee, which is why it suits people who find bright African coffees too sharp and dark roasts too harsh. It sits right in the middle and does it exceptionally well.
Medium or dark?
We carry both. Medium is the one to buy if you want to taste Blue Mountain itself, since less roast means more of the origin's character comes through, the fruit and the delicacy. The dark roast trades some of that for dark chocolate depth and a warmer, heavier cup. First time trying Blue Mountain? Start here. The whole point of a coffee this rare is tasting the place it came from.
Why Blue Mountain costs what it does
The certified region is roughly 6,000 acres, one of the smallest protected origins anywhere. The slopes are steep volcanic terrain where machinery can't operate, so every cherry is hand-picked at elevations up to 5,500 feet. Japan has historically taken the majority of each year's export allocation, so the US share is a slice of an already small supply.
Check the certification
JACRA certification is what verifies coffee as genuine Blue Mountain. It matters because a bag sold as a "Blue Mountain blend" can contain very little of the real thing. This is certified 100%, not a blend, which is the whole difference between this and the cheaper bag you saw somewhere else.
How to brew it
- Pour-over: medium grind, 30 second bloom. The clearest view of the chocolate and fruit, and where I'd start
- French press: coarse, 4 minutes, for more body
- Drip: clean and consistent for daily drinking
- Espresso: pulls well, and the mild acidity carries through milk
