100% Jamaica Blue Mountain, dark roast, whole bean, 8oz. There's dark roast, and then there's Blue Mountain dark roast, and they're not the same thing. This 8oz bag is the trial size: enough to find out why before you commit to a bigger one.
What it tastes like
Most dark roasts get their intensity from bitterness, the roast doing the talking instead of the bean. This one gets its depth from the coffee itself. Dark chocolate, natural sweetness, a warm velvety finish, and none of the ashy edge you brace for with a dark roast. Blue Mountain's famous silky body survives the roast level, which is the whole trick.
Why Blue Mountain costs what it does
The certified growing region is about 6,000 acres, one of the smallest protected origins in the world. The terrain is steep and cloud-covered, so nothing can be machine-harvested, and every cherry is picked by hand at elevations reaching 5,500 feet. Japan has historically bought the majority of each year's export allocation, so what reaches the US is a slice of an already tiny supply. Scarcity plus hand labour plus altitude is the whole price story.
Read the label carefully, everywhere
JACRA certification is what verifies coffee as genuine Blue Mountain, in both green and roasted form. It matters because a bag sold as a "Blue Mountain blend" can legally contain very little actual Blue Mountain coffee. This is certified 100%, not a blend. If you're comparing prices against something much cheaper, that's almost always the reason.
How to brew it
- Pour-over: medium grind, 30 second bloom. Cleanest look at the chocolate and body
- French press: coarse, 4 minutes. Pushes the silkiness forward, and it drinks well black
- Drip: the easy daily option, consistent and forgiving
- Espresso: pulls well, and the chocolate carries through milk
Details
- Origin: Blue Mountain region, Jamaica, JACRA certified
- Roast: dark
- Notes: dark chocolate, natural sweetness, silky body, warm finish
- Format: 8oz whole bean, vacuum packed with a one-way valve
- Roaster: Plantation Blue Coffee
Grind it fresh. At this price, pre-grinding it and letting it sit would be a genuine waste.
Frequently asked questions
Is this real 100% Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee?
Yes. It is JACRA certified 100% Jamaica Blue Mountain from Plantation Blue Coffee, not a Blue Mountain blend.
What does dark roast Blue Mountain taste like?
Dark chocolate, natural sweetness and a warm, velvety finish, without the ashy bitterness common in dark roasts. The bean's silky body carries through the roast.
How should I brew it?
Pour-over at a medium grind with a 30 second bloom shows the chocolate and body most clearly. French press, drip and espresso all work well too.
Why is it 8oz?
It is the trial size: enough to taste what makes Blue Mountain different before buying a larger bag.
