The Hario Mizudashi is a 1-liter cold brew coffee maker with a heatproof glass pitcher and reusable mesh strainer, so you do not need disposable paper filters. Add coffee, add water, refrigerate, remove the strainer, and pour.
This is cold brew without a countertop chemistry set. You brew and serve from the same pitcher, and cleanup starts with lifting out one filter basket.
How do you make cold brew with the Hario Mizudashi?
- Grind coffee medium-coarse.
- Add 8 to 10 grams of coffee per 100ml of water to the mesh strainer.
- For a full 1-liter pitcher, start with roughly 80 to 100 grams of coffee.
- Add water, making sure the grounds are evenly wet.
- Refrigerate for about eight hours.
- Lift out the strainer and serve the coffee over ice or straight from the fridge.
That recipe is a starting point, not a commandment. If the coffee tastes too strong, use less coffee or shorten the steep. If it tastes weak, use more coffee or steep longer. Change one thing at a time so you know what worked.
Does it need paper filters?
No. The included reusable mesh strainer holds the coffee during brewing. A medium-coarse grind is the better starting point because very fine grounds can pass through mesh and leave more sediment in the pitcher.
Does it make concentrate or ready-to-drink cold brew?
The starting recipe above is intended to make cold brew you can drink as brewed rather than a highly concentrated base. You can still adjust the coffee-to-water ratio if you prefer a stronger batch for mixing with water or milk.
Is cold brew the same as iced coffee?
No. Cold brew steeps ground coffee in cool water over several hours. Iced coffee is generally brewed hot and then cooled or poured over ice. They use different brewing methods and can taste different even when made with the same beans.
