A brighter side of Kenyan coffee

If you enjoy coffee with fruit and floral character rather than deep, smoky roast flavors, I'd start here. Kirenge Gold Light Roast is a single-origin Kenyan arabica coffee with citrus, blackcurrant, red berry, and lemon blossom notes, followed by a honey-like sweetness.

This is the coffee I'd reach for when I want to slow down with a pour-over and notice how the cup changes as it cools. It's offered in whole bean or ground, so you can choose the format that fits your setup.

What does it taste like?

  • Citrus and lemon blossom: a lively, floral opening.
  • Blackcurrant and red berries: layered fruit character.
  • Honey-like sweetness: a clean, sweet finish.
  • Wine-like acidity: a bright, refreshing quality rather than a heavy roast profile.

In coffee, “bright” describes a lively, tart quality, like the freshness of citrus or berries. These are tasting notes, not added fruit, flowers, or honey. Your brewing recipe affects which flavors stand out.

Where is it grown?

The coffee comes from Kirenge Farm in Kenya, where SL-28 and SL-34 arabica varieties grow at elevations of 1,500–1,800 meters in red volcanic soils. The light roast keeps the focus on the coffee's fruit, floral character, and sweetness.

Whole bean or ground?

  • Whole bean: choose this if you have a grinder and want to adjust the grind for your brewing method. Grind just before brewing.
  • Ground coffee: choose this if you want to brew without grinding at home.

Both formats come in a single 12 oz bag, a two-pack of 12 oz bags, or a three-pack of 12 oz bags.

How would I brew it?

I'd start with a V60, Chemex, AeroPress, or drip brewer. Pour-over is a useful way to explore the citrus and berry notes, while drip makes it an easy part of your morning routine.

Use your brewer's recommended recipe as a starting point. For pour-over, try water around 200–205°F (93–96°C), and match the grind to your brewer. If the cup tastes sharply sour, try a slightly finer grind or a longer extraction. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what helped.

Does light roast mean more caffeine?

Light roast describes the roast level, not a guaranteed caffeine amount. Your coffee dose, brewing method, and serving size all affect the caffeine in your cup. Choose this roast for its flavor rather than a promised caffeine boost.

My recommendation: start with one bag if you're exploring light roast. If you enjoy a lively cup with citrus and fruit notes, this gives you a clear place to begin.
