Hario V60 Paper Filters, Natural Brown

The standard filter for V60 brewing, made by the same people who make the dripper.

Which size do I need?

The number is stamped on your dripper, usually on the base or the side.

• Size 02 is the common one, for 1 to 4 cups. If you own one V60, it's almost certainly an 02
• Size 03 is the larger dripper, 1 to 6 cups

Size 02 comes as a 100-sheet refill or a 40-sheet box, which is the tidier one for travel or as part of a gift. Size 03 comes in 100 sheets.

Brown or white?

Brown is unbleached, so the paper never went through chlorine processing. White filters are bleached, usually with oxygen these days rather than chlorine, and both brew perfectly good coffee. The real difference is that unbleached paper has a slightly more noticeable papery character if you skip rinsing. Rinse either kind and you won't taste a thing.

Rinse the filter anyway

Put the filter in the dripper and pour hot water through it before you add coffee, then dump that water out. It washes off any paper taste and, more usefully, preheats the dripper and your mug. Cold ceramic steals heat from your brew, and that alone can make a cup taste weak.

Why not generic filters

Flat-bottom and basket filters don't work in a V60. The cone shape, the angle of the walls, and the paper thickness are all matched to the dripper's spiral ribs, and those ribs are what let air escape so water can draw down at the right speed. Wrong filter, wrong drawdown, and the brew time you're aiming for goes out the window.
