A paper filter is a small change to your espresso routine, but fit and placement matter. These hand-cut espresso paper filters come in standard Chemex paper and Ahlstrom Grade 909 cellulose paper, with multiple diameters for different baskets and brewing setups.
Use them to explore filtration and shot flow, or place a correctly sized paper on top of the puck to help keep coffee grounds away from the puck screen or group head. Start by choosing the paper type and measuring where it will sit, rather than relying on your portafilter's advertised size alone.
Standard paper or 909?
-
Standard Chemex paper: The standard option. Bottom-paper use can increase flow compared with a shot without paper, so you may need a finer grind to reach your preferred result.
-
909 cellulose paper: Ahlstrom Grade 909 qualitative paper with approximately 3 µm nominal particle retention. This finer-filtration option can slow extraction and may call for a coarser grind.
-
Hand-cut filters: Both paper types are cut to the selected diameter. Styles marked “909” identify the 909 paper option.
Your basket, dose, and preparation affect the result. Treat grind changes as starting points, not fixed rules, and compare one change at a time.
Choose the fit before the paper count
A basket's top and bottom can need different paper diameters. Measure the intended placement area and check your exact basket model. A paper that fits one 58 mm basket may not fit another in the same position.
View the basket size guide or use the printable sizing template. Print the template at actual size and verify its scale before checking the fit.

How to work them into your routine
For bottom placement, seat the correctly sized paper flat in the basket before adding coffee. For top placement, position it over the prepared puck. If using papers in both positions, check each diameter separately.
Start with a brewing recipe you know, then watch how the flow and taste change. Adjust the grind as needed rather than expecting the same shot time from a different paper. Bottom paper may help reduce spray from a bottomless portafilter, but it doesn't replace careful puck preparation.
