The Yama Glass 5-Cup Tabletop Siphon is a vacuum coffee brewer made from heat-resistant borosilicate glass. It uses an included alcohol burner to move hot water into the upper chamber, where it steeps with the coffee before filtering back into the lower carafe.

Siphon brewing is part coffee ritual, part hands-on science experiment. You can watch the water rise, stir the grounds, control the steep, and see the finished coffee return to the serving carafe. It asks for more attention than an automatic brewer, but that is the point.

How does a siphon coffee maker work?

As water heats in the lower carafe, vapor pressure pushes it into the upper chamber. Coffee steeps there while the burner is operating. After the heat is removed, cooling in the lower chamber creates a vacuum that pulls the brewed coffee back through the cloth filter.

Basic brewing workflow

1. Install the dampened cloth filter in the upper chamber, with the chain secured in the siphon tube.
2. Add hot water to the lower carafe without exceeding the marked capacity.
3. Add appropriately ground coffee to the upper chamber according to your recipe.
4. Fill and light the burner only as directed by the Yama instructions.
5. When the water rises, stir and steep the coffee according to your recipe.
6. Extinguish and cap the burner. Allow the brewed coffee to draw back into the lower carafe.
7. Remove the upper chamber carefully and place it in the included stand before serving.

Important safety information

This brewer uses an open flame and hot glass. Use only the burner fuel approved in the manufacturer’s instructions. Work on a stable, heat-resistant surface in a well-ventilated area, keep flammable materials away, never leave the flame unattended, and keep the brewer out of reach of children and pets. Do not touch or wash hot glass, and inspect all glass parts for chips or cracks before use.

What does the coffee taste like?

The cloth filter allows oils and some fine particles to pass that a paper filter may hold back. The final cup still depends on your coffee, grind, dose, water, steep time, agitation, and temperature.
