A vacuum siphon brewer that uses an alcohol flame to drive hot water up through a glass tube and into the grounds chamber, then draws the brewed coffee back down through a cloth filter as it cools. The brewing process is fully visible — water rising, coffee steeping, liquid descending — which makes it as much a table centerpiece as a brewer. Hands-on, tactile, and deliberate. Not a quick-cup machine.

The 3-cup rating uses Yama’s cup measurement of 3–4oz per cup — total yield is roughly 9–12oz per brew, enough for one generous mug or two small cups. If you’re brewing for more than one, the 5-cup version scales up. Alcohol burner included; alcohol sold separately (see fuel tip below). Borosilicate glass throughout — heat resistant and dishwasher safe.

Fuel tip: Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol works and is easy to find at any drug store, but denatured alcohol (hardware stores) burns hotter and heats the water noticeably faster. Worth having if you’re brewing regularly.

Brewing Instructions

1. Grind coffee slightly finer than auto drip. Experiment to taste — the siphon rewards dialing in.
2. Drop the cloth filter into the upper chamber with the chain hanging into the glass tube. Hook the chain to the bottom of the siphon tube to hold the filter in place.
3. Fill the bottom carafe to the 3-cup mark with hot water (starting with hot water cuts 4+ minutes off the heat time). Add 3 level measuring spoons of coffee to the upper chamber.
4. Fill the alcohol burner and light it. Place it directly below the bottom carafe.
5. As the water heats, it will siphon up through the tube and into the coffee grounds. Once most of the water has risen, let it steep for 2 minutes with the burner still lit.
6. Cap and extinguish the burner. As the bottom carafe cools, the brewed coffee draws back down through the filter.
7. Gently rock and remove the upper chamber. Place it in the lid/stand. Bring the bottom carafe to the table for serving.
