What a puck screen does

Water leaving the group head doesn't arrive evenly. It comes out in streams, and those streams dig into the top of the puck and carve channels, so water rushes through the gaps instead of soaking all the coffee. The result tastes sour and bitter at once, and it's inconsistent shot to shot. The screen spreads that water across the whole surface before it reaches the grounds.

The other reason people love them

Your shower screen stays dramatically cleaner. Less coffee oil baked onto the group head means less backflushing and less scrubbing, which for most people is worth the price on its own.

How to use it

Grind, distribute, tamp as usual, then set the screen flat on top of the tamped puck and lock in. Rinse it under hot water after each session. Every few weeks, soak it in espresso machine cleaner to clear out the oils, since a clogged screen slows your flow and will have you chasing a grind problem that doesn't exist.
