A 304 stainless precision portafilter basket with straight walls, a flat base, and 0.24mm holes drilled evenly across the bottom. Available for 54mm and 58mm portafilters, in 18g, 20g, and 22g doses, in titanium gold or raw stainless.

What a precision basket actually changes

Two things, and they're worth understanding before you spend money on a cup of metal.

The straight walls matter because a standard basket tapers inward toward the base. Tamp into a tapered basket and the puck comes out cone-shaped, denser at the bottom than at the rim, which means water meets different resistance depending on where it lands. Straight walls give you a cylinder, so the puck is the same density from center to edge.

The drilled holes matter because cheap stamped baskets have holes that vary in size and are often unevenly spread, with dead zones near the rim. Uniform 0.24mm holes across a flat base mean water drains at the same rate everywhere instead of favoring whichever patch of the basket has the most open area.

Honest expectations

This removes a variable. It doesn't fix bad grinding or a crooked tamp. If your shots are inconsistent because your grinder is uneven or your distribution is sloppy, fix that first, a precision basket won't rescue it. If you've already sorted your puck prep and you're chasing the last bit of consistency, this is exactly the right upgrade.

Which dose?

• 18g for single-boiler home machines and tighter 54mm groups
• 20g is the common home double, and the safe default if you're unsure
• 22g is a high-dose basket and needs headspace above the puck. Check your clearance first, especially on 54mm Breville and Sage machines, or you'll be screwing the portafilter into a wet puck
