How does the OXO grounds lifter work?

The lifter sits beneath the coffee grounds during brewing. After you pour the finished coffee, raise its handle to bring the spent grounds toward the top of the carafe. The plate also moves along the glass as it rises, helping collect grounds left behind.

It does not eliminate normal washing, but it gives you a cleaner starting point before the press reaches the sink.

How do you brew with this French press?

1. Start with coarsely ground coffee.
2. For a full 32 oz brew, try about 60g of coffee and adjust to taste.
3. Add hot water and make sure the grounds are evenly wet.
4. Steep for about four minutes.
5. Press the plunger down slowly and evenly.
6. Pour the coffee after plunging rather than leaving it sitting on the grounds.
7. Lift out the spent grounds for disposal, then hand wash the press.

Why use a coarse grind?

A coarse grind is the better starting point for French press because very fine coffee can pass through the metal mesh, leave more sediment in the cup, and make the plunger harder to press. If the brew tastes weak, adjust one variable at a time rather than immediately grinding much finer.

What does French press coffee taste like?

The stainless-steel mesh allows more coffee oils and fine particles into the cup than a paper filter. That generally produces a fuller-bodied texture, with some sediment at the bottom being normal for this brewing method.
