The cleaning problem, solved

Everyone who owns a french press knows the bit nobody mentions. You've got a beaker of sludge, and getting it out means either spooning it, rinsing it down a drain it will eventually block, or running the tap until it all washes through.

The grounds lifter is a plate that sits under the coffee bed. Raise it and the spent puck comes up in one piece. It squeegees the glass on the way, so the press is most of the way clean before it reaches the sink, and you use a fraction of the water.

Why french press coffee tastes different

Paper filters trap the oils. A metal mesh lets them through, so the cup is heavier and rounder with more body, and a little sediment at the bottom that comes with the territory.

Grind coarse, like raw sugar. Fine grounds slip through the mesh, make the plunger hard to press, and turn the last mouthful gritty. Four minutes of steeping, then plunge slowly and pour it all out, because coffee left sitting on the grounds keeps extracting and turns bitter.

Size

32oz is a sharing pot, two people or one person having a second cup. Fill it with about 60g of coarse coffee for a full brew.

It handles loose tea and yerba mate just as well, same method, same easy cleanup.
