What does a spring-loaded tamper do?

A tamper compresses the ground coffee in your portafilter basket before you brew. With a regular tamper, the angle and pressure depend on your hand. The Normcore V4 adds a leveling plate that rests on the basket rim and an internal calibrated spring that controls tamping resistance. Ripple base or flat base?

The difference is the surface touching the coffee. This ripple base has circular ridges that leave a patterned surface on the puck; a flat base leaves a smooth surface. Choose this version if you want to try a ripple-style tamp with spring-loaded pressure control. The pattern alone isn't a guarantee of better espresso. Even grounds distribution, the right dose and grind adjustment still matter.

How to work it into your routine

1. Dose your coffee into a clean, dry basket and distribute the grounds evenly.
2. Support the portafilter on a stable tamping surface.
3. Place the tamper squarely over the basket so the leveling plate sits evenly on the rim.
4. Press in a controlled motion, keeping the portafilter steady, then lift the tamper out.
5. Clear loose grounds from the rim and brew.

Start with the pre-installed 25 lb spring and concentrate on repeating the same preparation each time. You can switch to the included 15 lb or 30 lb spring to suit your preference. Pressing harder isn't a substitute for dialing in your grinder.
