Sometimes the interesting coffee experiments are the small ones. These pre-cut espresso paper filters add a paper layer to your portafilter routine, giving you another variable to explore without cutting circles out of a larger filter. Choose from 51mm, 53mm, or 58mm diameters and 100- or 200-count options.
If you are curious about paper filtering your espresso, start with the right fit and compare it with your usual shot. Your grind, dose, and preparation still do the heavy lifting. A paper filter is an experiment, not a shortcut to perfect coffee.
What are espresso paper filters?
They are small, pre-cut paper discs used inside an espresso basket. Placed beneath the coffee, paper adds a filtering layer between the grounds and the basket openings. Some espresso routines use a disc above the tamped puck instead, where it acts as a barrier between the coffee and incoming water.
Those are different uses, so decide where you want to place the paper before choosing a diameter. A tapered basket can be narrower at the bottom than at the top.
The details that matter
- Pre-cut discs: No need to cut each filter by hand.
- Diameter options: 51mm, 53mm, and 58mm.
- Quantity options: 100 or 200 filters.
- Use: A paper-filtering step for a compatible espresso basket.
Which size should I choose?
Measure the inside of your basket at the position where the paper will sit. Choose a disc that lies flat without folding up the sides. Do not rely on your machine brand or nominal portafilter size alone: different basket shapes can need different paper diameters.
The 53mm option is a paper diameter, not a claim that it fits every machine sold with a 54mm portafilter. Check the actual basket fit before ordering.
How to try a bottom paper filter
Place a correctly sized disc flat at the bottom of a clean basket. Add your weighed coffee dose, distribute the grounds evenly, and tamp as usual. Brew and compare the taste and flow with your normal recipe.
Paper can change how the shot behaves, so you may need to revisit the grind. Keep your dose and target espresso yield steady while making adjustments. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether the paper is doing something you like.
Is this the same as a metal puck screen?
No. These are paper filters, not reusable metal screens. A metal puck screen and a paper disc differ in material, thickness, and how they fit into your preparation. Choose the accessory for the routine you want to test rather than treating the names as interchangeable.
Use a fresh paper disc for each shot and discard it with the used grounds. If the extra step improves your coffee, keep it. If you prefer your usual recipe, that is a useful result too.
