An espresso puck screen is a small addition to your prep routine: tamp your coffee, place the screen on top, and then brew. This stainless steel screen sits inside the portafilter basket above the coffee puck, between the grounds and the machine's shower screen.
If you're working on a more consistent espresso routine, it's another detail you can experiment with without replacing your machine. Start with the size that fits your basket, then keep your dose, grind, and tamp consistent so you can judge the results for yourself.
What is an espresso puck screen?
A puck screen is a separate screen placed over the tamped coffee. It provides a layer between the incoming water and the surface of the puck and can help keep coffee grounds from contacting the machine's shower screen directly. It is a basket accessory, not a replacement for the shower screen attached to your espresso machine.
A screen isn't a shortcut around dialing in your coffee. Your grind, dose, and puck preparation still matter. Think of it as one part of the setup rather than a promise that every shot will suddenly be perfect.
Choose the size for your basket
- 51 mm options: Choose for a basket that accommodates a 51 mm puck screen.
- 58.5 mm options: Choose for a basket that accommodates a 58.5 mm puck screen. Check the basket's internal dimensions rather than relying on the machine's nominal portafilter size alone.
- Layer options: Two-layer and three-layer versions are available in the combinations shown in the selector.
- A, B, and C labels: Use the complete option name when choosing your size and version.
The screen should sit flat over the coffee without being forced into the basket. Leave enough room above the tamped puck for the screen and your machine's required clearance. Check your basket and machine guidance before ordering.
How to use your puck screen
- Grind, dose, distribute, and tamp your coffee as usual.
- Place the correctly sized screen flat on top of the tamped puck.
- Lock in the portafilter and brew following your machine's instructions.
- After brewing, let the screen cool before handling it. Remove it carefully and rinse away the coffee residue.
Make cleaning the screen part of your normal cleanup, and continue cleaning your machine's shower screen as recommended. Adding a puck screen doesn't replace regular machine care.
