If you're only going to upgrade one thing in your espresso setup, make it your scale. Espresso is a recipe — dose in, yield out, time in between — and eyeballing any of those numbers is the fastest way to an inconsistent shot. Here's what to actually look for.
Get one with both a timer and a gram measurement. Weight tells you how much coffee went in and how much espresso came out. Time tells you how fast it happened. You need both running at once to actually dial in a shot — a scale with only one or the other means you're still guessing at half the equation.
Accuracy matters more than you'd think. Look for 0.1g precision, minimum. The difference between an 18g and 18.5g dose sounds tiny, but it's enough to noticeably shift extraction. A scale that only reads in whole grams isn't precise enough for espresso — save that for drip coffee.
Get a rechargeable one. Nobody wants to dig through a junk drawer for a coin-cell battery at 6am before their first cup. A USB-C rechargeable scale means one less thing standing between you and your shot, and most hold a charge for weeks of daily use.
Easy to clean, easy to live with. Coffee grounds and spilled shots happen. A flat, wipeable surface beats one with seams and buttons that trap grounds — you'll actually keep it clean if cleaning it isn't a chore.
Size matters more than people expect. A lot of scales are built for drip coffee and are too wide to fit under a portafilter on your machine's drip tray. Look for something compact enough to tuck under the group head — if you have to move your scale every time you pull a shot, you'll eventually stop using it.
The good news: you don't have to hunt for all of this separately. Every scale in our Espresso Tools collection is rechargeable and accurate to 0.1g — start there, and check the dimensions against your machine's clearance before you buy.
